Consider your location and season. I am a big believer in dressing for the seasons for many reasons – comfort being the most important. If you show up to a fall session dressed in summery clothes, chances are you will be cold and kids will have meltdowns. The same goes for dressing for a summer session in sweaters and pants (I have seen it happen!) Keep in mind that sessions in the mountains tend to be a few degrees cooler than in the valley. I love the way outfits, seasons, and location can complement each other seamlessly when considered thoughtfully. This can extend to style of clothing, color schemes, accessorizing, etc.
Pick mom’s outfit first. I have found when things are planned around mom’s outfit, things come together easily! I also feel like it’s so important for moms to feel confident and comfortable with what they wear so they love their photos that much more. So moms – find that outfit you completely love and feel the most you in. Maybe it’s already in your closet! You can also consider how you want your session to feel when choosing your look – do you want to be playing with your kids on the ground? Your favorite jeans would be perfect. Do you want it to feel more dressy casual? Choose a dress you wear regularly. Are you hoping for a more formal/editorial vibe? Choose a statement piece that will elevate your photographs to that level.
Choose a color scheme. Once you know your session date, location, and what mom is wearing I like to create a color scheme to make sure things are cohesive. It makes it easier on you to pick outfits because it will guide you through the process. I love to consider the season of the shoot when choosing my color scheme as well. For fall I love warmer jewel tones, and for summer I love lighter and airier tones. I always stick to neutrals, and tend to add a pop of color (still a more neutral tone not hot pink or neon) to add interest. Pinterest already has this done for you. A quick search will give you at least a good starting point.
See what you have before you buy. For whatever reason, there’s this idea around family photos that we need to buy all new clothes. While sometimes this is the case – I don’t ever want you to feel like you have to go buy all new clothes for your session. A lot of time you will have the perfect item already in your closet.
Add in some texture, patterns, and accessories. This is my favorite part of outfit planning! You’ve got the foundation laid for beautiful outfits with tips 1-4, but this is what makes all the difference. Patterns :: I love to have at least one person in a pattern. I tend to lean toward daintier patterns to maintain a level of calmness in your photographs. You also want to be careful with plaid/gingham/stripe patterns to avoid moire (google it!). Texture: this can really add interest to your photos. I love to add in knee high socks, sweaters, different fabrics and textiles. Accessories: although minor, these details will impact your look for the better! See where you can add in a hat, sweater, jacket, jewelry, belts, etc.
BONUS TIP: Don’t forget the shoes! Shoes are often an afterthought because we put them on as we are heading out the door. So many times my clients text me the day of – “I forgot to think about shoes!” and are left scrambling at the last minute.
There you have it! It may seem like there is a lot to consider for planning your family outfits, but I promise you the investment of time will be worth it to really elevate your family’s look. As always, I am here to help you coordinate your outfits and make sure everything is flowing together seamlessly and beautifully!
